The conspicuously scanty discussion of epistemology in the original and the secondary works on Sāṁkhya-Yoga gives an impression that Sāṁkhya-Yoga has very little to contribute to Indian epistemology. The present study brings forth the originality of Samkhya-Yoga epistemology, evaluates it in the light of its criticism by other systems and reveals the strength and weakness in Sāṁkhya-Yoga explanation as also the points of agreement and controversy between Sāṁkhya-Yoga and other systems.

An information of the epistemological differences between Sāṁkhya and Yoga is another feature of the work. Divided into eight chapters the work deals with the problems on nature and genesis of knowledge (ch. I), valid knowledge and its means (ch. 2), number and scope of means of knowledge (ch. 3), various aspects of Perception like nature, process and kinds, psychology involved and perceptual error (ch. 4), facets of Inference like nature, components, kinds and fallacies (ch. S), Verbal testimony (ch. 6), and test of validity of knowledge (ch. 7). The entire discussion is concluded with a resume (ch. 8).

The book is documented with an Introduction, Bibliography and Index.
